Welsh Cup Round 1: 16/9/06
Chirk AAA 1-3 Conwy
Chirk's suffered a first round Welsh Cup exit at the hands of visitors Conwy.
Despite taking the lead on 2 minutes their dismal run in the competition
continued with them suffering their seventh first round exit in eight seasons.
Chirk winger Adam Bradshaw proved a threat as early as the first minute with
several Conwy defenders falling over themselves as they tried to deal with his
mazy run into the area. Bradshaw turned provider a minute later when his
accurate ball into the box beat two defenders to find the in-rushing Gareth
Roberts at the far post who steered the ball past keeper Vaughan to put Chirk
into the lead. It was all the home side in the first 20 minutes with midfielder
Paul Douglas Jones bossing things in midfield. Jones just failed with two long
range efforts after making space for himself, the first went wide with his
second effort beating Vaughan in goal only to cannon off the crossbar on 21
minutes. Conwy's Spencer went close minutes later latching onto a through ball
from midfielder Urquart, with the striker firing over from eight yards out after
pressure from Chirk defender Richie Lloyd. Chirk's stand-in keeper Scott was
called into action seconds later saving well from Ferguson to push the ball out
for a corner. The visitors drew level off the resulting corner, Cassidy's kick
was punched clear by Scott, only to fall at the feet of Adam Jones whose 15 yard
effort finished in the top corner. Before Chirk had chance to respond they were
rocked by another goal a minute later, Conwy midfielder Urquart beat the offside
trap to race through and round Scott in goal to give his side the lead. Two last
ditch tackles by Chirk defender Darren Jones saved his side any further blushes
just before half time with him foiling both Spencer and James Jones when through
on goal.
The second half saw Conwy score their third on 55 minutes, Rob Jones long ball
over the top of the Chirk defence found Urquart who coolly lobbed Scott in goal
with the midfielder claiming his second goal of the game. Chirk's Bradshaw went
close on 60 minutes with his 25 yard free-kick grazing the top of the visors
crossbar. Chirk's Roberts was foiled by keeper Vaughan with a close range effort
while at the other end Scott again saved well off a stinging Cassidy shot. Chirk
won a free-kick on the edge of the area on 75 minutes, with Paul Douglas Jones
guiding the ball into the top corner only to see his strike disallowed by
referee Roberts who was still pacing out the Conwy wall, Jones earned himself a
yellow card for this with the following free-kick flying high. Conwy comfortly
held on for the remainder of the game to go into the drew for the next round.
Chirk received four yellow cards and one red after forward Roberts handled in
the Conwy area for a second bookable offence.
