27/4/07 W.N.L. Premier Division
Chirk AAA 2-3 Mold Alexandra.
Mold continued their march to Cymru Alliance
football with a hard fought 3-2 win over Chirk at Holyhead Road. Mold
attacked the home side from the first minute with both their wide men
getting behind the Chirk defence to deliver cross's into the box. Chirk
struggled to match Mold's fluent passing and went behind on 10 minutes to a
Lee Stevens goal. Mold continued to press but were soon knocked out of
their stride when Chirk hit them on the break, Derek Lloyds long upfield
clearance fell to the feet of youngster Joe Roberts who sprinted towards
goal before coolly lobbing Molds keeper from 20 yards out to level the
score. This instilled new confidence in the home side and Mold soon found
themselves in a hard battle. Sloppy marking gifted Mold their second on 40
minutes when captain Wes Brereton headed in from close range off a Martin
Phillips cross. Second half saw more chances for both teams with the goal
of the game coming courtesy of Chirk's Jon Paul Wood. The home side were
awarded a free-kick on 70 minutes with Wood curling the ball into the top
corner from 25 yards out leaving the keeper routed to the spot. A touch of
desperation crept in Mold's play now with them pushing forward in search of
the winner, this came on 75 minutes after Brereton found striker Stuart Rain
unmarked in front of goal with the former Connah's Quay Nomads striker
heading home past Valentine to put his side back in front. Chirk were
determined to salvage a point which saw Mold hanging on for the last 10
minutes with some hard and furious tackles coming in from both sides before
the referee blew for full time. Mold have now gone eight games unbeaten and
continue to put pressure on Cefn Utd in second spot. Chirk look forward to
May with them having lost four of their last five games in April.
Chirk's next match is at home to fifth placed
Hawarden Rangers on Tuesday evening, 6.30pm Ko.
