31/3/07  W.N.L. Premier Division
Chirk AAA 1-0  Llay Welfare

Chirk recorded their fifth win in six games with a narrow verdict over Llay Welfare.   Welfare can be hard-felt not to have got something out of the game with them playing the better football in the first half.  Chirk were missing several key players through injury following last weeks 'derby' match draw at leaders Cefn United.  Both sides missed chances with Llay forward Gibson tormenting the Chirk rear guard with his pace.  Llay midfielder Guest squandered a glorious chance to put his side in front on 20 minutes with him shooting wide from 15 yards after latching onto a through ball from Tindle.  Chirk Player/Manager Mike Hughes tested Llay keeper Coombs with a fierce drive on the half hour mark with the visiting keeper having to scramble across his goalmouth to palm away the ball.  Chirk's opening came on 44 minutes after the physical Gareth Roberts squared the ball into the path of fellow striker Anthony Jones who curled the ball past Coombs from 10 yards out to give his side the lead.  The second half got underway with the visitors pressing for an equaliser, with defender Pritchard running upfield and slotting in Griffiths who blasted over with only Parrish to beat.  Chirk player Chris Evans caught the eye with the diminutive winger winning several 50/50 tackles against the burly Llay defenders.  Llay keeper Coombes almost gifted Chirk a second goal on 70 minutes after failing to deal with a  upfield lob with Chirk's Roberts beating him to the ball only to head inches wide of the post.  The Chirk defence of Lloyd, Hughes, Randall and Nash stood firm to deny the visitors and extend Chirk's run to six games unbeaten.

Chirk have no game next week in preparation for their NEWFA Cup semi final match against Cymru Alliance side Bala Town on 7/4/07 which will be played at Brymbo with a 2.30 pm KO.
