Den Lloyd Memorial Charity Match; 27/12/05

The second annual Den Lloyd Charity Match kicked off at 10.30 on Tuesday morning. The teams of Over 30's and Under 30's lined up against each other in this worthwhile cause with all proceeds going to Wrexham based charity Nightingale House Hospice. The game got underway on a pitch covered with frost with the Over 30's dominating the opening 10 minutes. The 'veterans' had goal machine Paul Roberts to thank for their opening goal after he skilfully lobbed a defender before swivelling to fire home from 10 yards out on four minutes. They went further in front after defender Tony Humphrey's 30 yard run was finished with an inch perfect pass to the attacking Mike Wilson who made no mistake on 9 minutes. The youngsters soon found their pace and started to put pressure on their opponents goal. This was rewarded on 22 minutes with the bulky Mike Nash scoring from 20 yards out with a fierce drive which Parrish couldn't get to. The over 30's responded in the right manner with Paul Roberts again punishing some slack defending to score his second and restore his side's two goal lead. The youngsters got a goal back after their striker Wayne Pugh was brought down inside the area in an appalling tackle from keeper Parish. Up stepped Nash to rifle home past the keeper to hit his second and bring the score to 3-2 to the Over 30's. Ian 'arnie' Evans was not to be denied up front for the veterans after he had wasted a number of clear cut chances from his frustrated team mates. He scored with his back to goal with a defenders clearance hitting him on the back of the head and flying in past keeper Evans to give the veterans a 4-2 lead. With only minutes remaining Mike Nash scored after he turned his marker inside out to fire past Parish from the edge of the area. This set up a tense finish with the Over 30's clinching victory for them to claim the trophy for the second successive season. Chirk AAA F.C. would like to thank all involved on the day and look forward to this event getting bigger and better next year.
